Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge in Peterborough earns outstanding accreditation

January 12th, 2018

The local Canadian Mental Health Association's commitment to high quality care and safety has earned the organization an outstanding accreditation.

Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) was awarded an Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada.

CMHA received a score of 99.5 per cent based on Accreditation Canada's standards, which focus on community based mental health services, infection, prevention and control, medication management and leadership and governance.

Accreditation Canada is an international third party organization that typically accredits long-term care facilities and hospitals. It assesses and evaluates performance relating to quality improvement.

CMHA officials opted to have the assessment done to make sure the organization was meeting best practices standards.

"We're striving to achieve high-quality improvement and safety," said Mark Graham, CEO of CMHA HKPR.

The accreditation also lets CMHA know where they stand in comparison to other similar organizations.

The four-year accreditation process includes self-assessment surveys for staff and board members as well as client experience surveys. It caps off with a four-day on site evaluation by two surveyors.

CMHA received an accreditation by Accreditation Canada in 2013, but at a lower level.

Since then, CMHA staff members have worked hard to improve their care and services.

To do that, the organization used the Ontario Perception of Care (OPOC) tool, which gathers feedback from clients.

Of the 250 client responses reviewed, the importance of family support to a client's journey to recovery was clearly stated.

CMHA addressed that need by creating Journey Together, a program designed to help families of those with mental health concerns.

It also established a Lived Expertise Advisory Panel, comprised of citizens and their families who've benefited from CMHA.

The organization also developed a new strategic plan for 2017-20 that will further its commitment to providing client and family-centred care in support of recovery.

Receiving the Exemplary Standing speaks volumes about the level of service CMHA provides, Graham said.

"It's saying that we take quality care and quality service seriously."

To achieve the status also highlights how hard CMHA staff worked to improve the organization since its last assessment, Graham added.

"It's a team effort. We've achieved a personal best for our organization.
